Yum Yum

Food is basic needs of our life and let's just say I'm a needy one on this category. I love good food! In this blog, I'd post pic of foods I dine in restaurants and tell what I think about them. I might also cook/bake sometime =)

sagurangi and col enak dessert @ Bogor

I went to Bogor again last Friday. I stopped by that "ronde" stall at Jalan Suryakencana again and bought this "sagurangi" dessert. It's made out of yam chunks, palm sugar, sago, and coconut milk.

The yam chunks is not too chewy but not too soft either, so it's really good in texture. The sweetness from palm sugar is not too much which is good =). The sago is kind of lumpy, which is supposed to be in this dessert. The coconut milk is fragrance and rich in flavor. So, mix them together and you get a great dessert named "sagurangi".

I even bought one home and eat it the next day, it's still so good! You just got to put the coconut milk in a bowl and don't cover it with anything. It will stay good for a day =)

Not too far from this ronde stall (turn left at Jalan Roda), there's a small stall selling "col enak" dessert. This dessert made out of fermented cassava and banana topped with young coconut meat and palm sugar then poured with coconut milk.

The banana and fermented cassava has already been grilled so it's really fragrant. The sweetness even though looks like too sweet with all that palm sugar, it's not. It's just right! The young coconut meat and fermented cassava is soft in texture while the banana is kind of chewy to balance it. Love it!

"putu bambu" @Pluit area, Jakarta

I was looking for a late night snack couple days ago, but because of Lebaran holiday, most of them still closed. But, when I passed the Pluit area, I noticed the stall that sells "putu bambu" is open =). So, I decided to buy some.

Putu bambu is made from rice flour and it's filled with palm sugar then steamed. It's served with shredded coconut. This stall sells a great "putu bambu", it's really fragrance, the sweetness is just right and not petty on the filling and topping =P

Other than "putu bambu", this stall also sell great "lopis (green and black versions available), putu mayang and klepon". I would review them some other time =)

"oxtail soup/sup buntut and dessert" Bogor Cafe @Pacific Place Mall, Jakarta

I went to Pacific Place mall couple days ago to eat this "Soup Buntut or Oxtail Soup" at Bogor Cafe (branch from Borobudur Hotel. This mall is actually quite far from my place compared to the hotel itself. But, the price for this dish is cheaper at this mall hehe. Also in this mall you got a choice of small, medium or legendary size, while in the hotel you only got 1 choice. The taste is the same, though =)

This "oxtail soup" from Bogor Cafe is the best I had so far. The soup is really refreshing and the meat is really soft. The dish include rice and chips we called "emping" (it's made from belinjo). I usually dip the chips into the soup just before I bite it, so I still have a lil bit of crunch from it and the refreshing taste from the soup.

If you like "oxtail soup" and haven't try this one, you have to!

For the dessert, I try this "grilled banana with coconut ice cream". The banana is grilled then drizzled with liquid palm sugar. The banana's texture is not too soft, it still has a bit of crunchiness into it which I think is good, and it's not too sweet so the palm sugar complement it real good! The best part of this dessert for me is the ice cream though. The coconut ice cream is not soft in texture, it's crunchy but rich in coconut taste. Love it!

"Kremes" from Cibinong

On the way back from Bogor yesterday, we stopped by Cibinong to buy this sweet snack. It's called "kremes". It's made out of sweet potato and then fried. The sweetness other than the sweet potato itself came from palm sugar and this one I think has a bit of jack-fruit fragrant into it. The sweetness is just right and really crunchy.

The best "kremes" is from this city Cibinong. Sure you can buy it from snack store all around Jakarta, but the taste doesn't beat this one.

I went to -Singapore- restaurant @Pluit today and order this dessert "es campur solo".

The ingredients are mixture of black glutinous rice, grass jelly, cendol (traditional  dessert), tape (fermented cassava), sweet potato balls, jack-fruit with crushed ice and coconut milk already sweetened with palm sugar. It's really yummy!

If you happened to be in Pluit area and craving for something sweet and refreshing, try this dessert =)

"bubur ketan hitam" @Muara Karang, Jakarta

"Ketan hitam" translate to "black glutinous rice" and "bubur" translate to "congee or porridge" so "bubur ketan hitam" is basically a porridge out of black glutinous rice. This porridge is usually eaten as a dessert because it taste sweet.

The black glutinous rice is cook in low heat with pandan leaf in the water to give fragrance into the dessert. And, when it's thicken and soft, add the palm sugar. Then, we eat it with coconut milk.

Traditional Indo dessert "bubur sum-sum" @Social House, Grand Indonesia mall, Jakarta

I went to SoHo yesterday with my friends and ordered one of the traditional Indonesian dessert that just available since the fasting month started. I was expecting a really good dessert since SoHo is one of my fav place to hang out either for lunch/dinner, having high tea, or just drinking.

When it came out, I was so happy that I found that SoHo kinda twist the dessert with adding "pisang ijo" (translate to "green banana", it's another Indonesian dessert, it's a banana wrapped in green skin made of glutinous flour) that they made into balls and I think "red beans" balls. The white paste is the so called "bubur sum-sum". And, they pour palm sugar liquid on top of them.

But, I was very disappointed when I took my first bite. First, I taste the white paste, it was really bland!! even though I already mix it with the sugar, it's just bland! Then, I tried the "pisang ijo", the banana is not that sweet, and the skin is not that good. And, I'm not really sure what the other balls are, I think they are "red beans" but I'm not sure at all since the taste is really weird hahaha. And, I think, it tasted kinda like soap.

After a couple bites, I just stopped and doesn't even bother to eat it anymore. So, no more "bubur sum-sum" from SoHo for sure!!!

Sweet Martabak @Muara Karang, Jakarta

My family bought this "sweet martabak" yesterday night for today's breakfast. The stall located @Muara Karang across Eaton restaurant more or less. The stall named -Sinar Bulan- which translate to Moon Light.

We ordered it plain (usually people order it with toppings like cheese, chocolate and/or peanuts on it) because we want to spread some "durian" on it. It was my mom's idea to buy some durian fruit and put it on the plain martabak hehehe. Of course, there are some "martabak" stall that sells "durian flavor martabak" but this one stall don't have it. My family love their martabak though, the texture is really soft and even without anything on it, it's already so delicious!!!

Then, we also bought this "tipker". It's actually a short name for "tipis kering" which translate to thin and dry. Because it's actually a sweet martabak just like the one up there, but then they cut the rising dough and leave only the bottom part and bake it til crispy! The topping is sugar, peanuts, chocolate and sesame seeds. Yummy!

Cake n food from the market @Petak Sembilan, Jakarta

At the top of this picture is what we, Indonesians, called "putu mayang". It's served with a liquefied palm sugar. "Putu mayang" is made out of rice flour, but some made it out of rice vermicelli. The rice flour one is so much better in my opinion because it's more springy in texture, while the rice vermicelli often time is kind of dry. People usually put the liquefied palm sugar in a small bowl and dip the "putu mayang" in it, let them soak a bit then eat it. But, I like to just dip it a little just before I eat it. That way I can still feel the rice flour taste that's not overpowered by the palm sugar. How do you like to eat yours?

At bottom right is called "Bolu Kukus" which translate to "Steamed Cake". It's named that because it's how they made this cake. They make the cake batter then put in cups with paper cup on it. Why the paper cup when there's already cups? Because the cups have holes on them. I'll add a pic of the cup too just in case you got curious.

This "bolu kukus" is soft in texture and has chocolate flavor, but I'm getting a hint of mocha/coffee taste from it. When you cook "bolu kukus" it's supposed to bloom like this one. Some even say, when you're steaming it, you have to smile all the time so the cake will smile, too. But, when you think of it realistically, it's probably the way you mix the batter that matter, hehehe but it doesn't hurt to smile, right? =)

At bottom left is called "bacang". It's traditionally from China. It's a rice or glutinous rice with filling of meat (the traditional one is pork, but since it got universal now, lots of them filled with chicken or beef) and depends on the maker, they can add other stuff like salted egg (the yellow part only), dried shrimp, mushroom, or chestnuts and then they are wrapped with bamboo leaves into a pyramid shape.

I like the glutinous rice version better because I like the chewiness it provide. There is a guy that sells this "bacang" with glutinous rice and the feeling is cubed pork (usually it's minced but he always served it cubed and I'm loving it!) and then there's mushroom, chestnut, dried shrimp and salted egg in it, too. He doesn't sell it everyday, he usually call my mom when he want to cook them to offer if my mom wants to buy it. And, it doesn't come cheap either =P but his "bacang" IS the best!!
